Reasons for developing a multimedia application:
- to reach an audience with limited or no internet access
- to provide take away product promotion on CDROM or DVDROM
- to provide online video based training demonstration
- to simulate training on real world software applications so end users can be tested in a familiar environment (this includes user mouse clicks, keyboard input, and decision trees)
Features of multimedia applications:
- include video aspects for visual demonstrations
- include audio aspects such as voice narration or background music
- have your application wrapped inside Flash which provides a rich user experience
- capacity for pop-up text prompts and mouse clicks (i.e. can receive user input)
- can be delivered over a variety of mediums including the internet, CDROM / DVD or portable Flash drive
- can be delivered with independence from the end user operating system (e.g. Windows, Mac, Linux)
Interactive multimedia applications offer an alternative to web delievery. CDROMs and DVDROMs are a better medium for very large and high quality multimedia presentations.
Digital Catalyst have delivered rich CDROM based multimedia applications to the following organisations:
Roads and Traffic Authority of NSW:
The Roads and Traffic Authority (NSW) required an interactive training simulation for their new browser based software for heavy vehicle inspections (replacing blue slips) and for this to be delivered on a CDROM.
The training comprised of approximately 20 different user scenarios within the software.
This simulation uses video captured screenshots of the software and then mock user scenario tests with instructions where a user in training may have entered some erroneous input.
